Resveratrol is a natural compound found in red grape skin, Japanese knotweed (polygonum cuspidatum), peanuts, blueberries and some other berries. It is a powerful antioxidant that protects against environmental stresses, and neutralizes free radicals, which are believed to be the cause of aging.  Free radicals are unstable atoms caused by pollution, sunlight and our bodies natural burning of fat that can lead to cancer, aging and brain degeneration.

Resveratrol also promotes a healthy inflammatory response in your body—including helping to alleviate some of the oxidative stress and inflammation that can lead to premature aging. Preliminary research also suggests the benefits of resveratrol may help to protect the blood vessel walls against oxidation and cholesterol, promoting heart and vascular health, and protecting against clots which can cause heart attacks and stroke.

Thousands of studies involving resveratrol have been conducted since the 1980s. One landmark study at Harvard University showed that when mice ate a high-fat, high-calorie diet plus resveratrol beginning at 12 months of age (equivalent to age 40 in humans), they not only lived about 30 percent longer than a control group, but they also had significantly fewer age-associated health problems.

After years of debate, Harvard Medical School researchers are saying they have confirmed that compound resveratrol that's found in red wine does provide anti-aging benefits.
The study, which was published on 'Science', shows that resveratrol stimulates production of SIRT1, a serum that blocks diseases by speeding up the cell's energy production centers known as mitrochondria. Researchers have also figured out which gene allows resveratrol to produce SIRT1.

New studies give insight into how resveratrol may ward off several age-related diseases. The findings help in the development of drugs to curtail some of the health problems that arise as we get older. Resveratrol affects the activity of enzymes called sirtuins. Sirtuins control several biological pathways and are known to be involved in the aging process.
